Marlin 1897

I restored an old and tired 97 marlin in 22 this winter. I made a few parts for the action, relined the barrel with a Redmans liner, made new stocks, rust blued the barrel, nitre blued the small parts, and casehardened the action. I am still working on the finish on the wood that is essentially hand rubbed tung oil finish. I did do a couple coats of Shellac for sealer after the first few coats of oil. It now shoots great and is a lovely little rifle. I also had a Lyman tang sight from an English Express rifle that I reblued and installed as well.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.
