Barreling Hepburn and Stevens 44 1/2

This weekend I received 3 barrel blanks from Ron Smith. Two are 38-55 and one is 22. All are gain twist chrome moly. One 38-55 is going on a Hepburn the other two are switch barrels for a Stevens 44 1/2 pistol grip, double set triggers. This weekend I cut the shanks, threaded and fit them. I also chambered and head spaced them. I haven’t cut the extractor slots yet, I will do that after I taper them and cut the octagon on them.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.
