Profiling Barrels

This week was busy at work with some teaching in the evenings and such but I did get in the shop today for a bit. I am doing a few repairs but set my lathe up and tapered some barrels. Three of the barrels are half octagon so I cut them to the large diameter first using a live centre and 3 jaw chuck. Then i put them between centres and offset the tail stock to taper them. I used a steady rest and a piece of hard maple to keep the vibration down while cutting. Next up is set up the milling machine to octagon them.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.
