Happy New year – 40 cal Flintlock

Happy new year. I chose to finish out 2023 by working on a 40 cal flintlock with a hard maple (mostly plain) and a swamped Rice barrel and a good Chambers lock. I am getting pretty close to start the finishing process. Hopefully this spring I can give it a great work out. I always wanted a 40 cal flintlock as my first experience with a flintlock was a walnut stocked poor boy in 40 cal that Dale Friesen had built while I was hanging out in his shop as a kid. After he finished it we headed to the hills and shot gophers with it at Art Unsworths ranch. After that I was enamoured with flintlocks and I still am. I think this 40 cal moderate weight flinter with a 38” barrel should be good fun.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.
