Ballard Pacific 38-55

Recently I purchased a Ballard Pacific 38-55 on a online auction. It is a lovely original rifle but unfortunately the bore was no good. It was way oversize and rough. I took it to the range and tried it but the bullets were coming out sideways! I purchased a TJ liner from Nine35.ca a little while ago for a 38-55. I drilled out the barrel and installed the liner. I replaced the blade front sight with a MVA sight. I took it back to the range and now it is an amazing shooter. I haven’t met a Ballard yet that can’t be made to shoot very well. The set trigger is amazing and it has a very nice original Ballard Mid Range Tang sight. I think I will replace the front sight with a windage front sight so I can adjust windage for long range BPCR shooting. The stock is original but the butt stock has some repairs at the top at the back of the action and I think I will need to reinforce this area if I am going to shoot it a bunch. I left the finish original as it has 140 years to wear to this finish and I like ti.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.
