Building a Fowler
A couple years ago I bought a Fowler kit from an estate. It is a kit by Jim Chambers and is a really nice shape and weight with an exceptional piece of Maple. I have been working on it with the goal of having it done this spring so I can use it this year. I am colouring the wood using tannic acid and Aqua Fortis. I really like the colour is taking after applying tung oil. I have nitre blued the small parts and am slow rust browning the barrel. Here is a video of the heat treatment process to turn the green stock to red/brown. In this video I show you how I rub the tung oil in and it really makes the color and contrast pop.
I casehardened the lock, I think it looks okay and will fit the rifle fairly well. I polished to 320 grit, heated for 2 hours at 320, quenched it with the air bubbling (electric fish pump).

I finally finished the fowler and it turned out well.

I shot the fowler today. It is great fun to shoot and has fast ignition.
