Christmas Favorite

This holliday I rebuilt an 1894 Stevens Favorite. I bought a rusty action and a shot out 25 cal barrel with a forend. I used a Cooey barrel to make a new barrel in the Stevens barrel except it is now 26” long. I put a new buttstock and buttplate on it. The rear sight is a Marbles sight with windage and elevation but it came with a big block for mounting to a new Marlin so I cut that off and silver soldered on a new sight base. The front sight was a long wierd looking Lyman 17 so I cut it down and lowered it right down to the barrel. The action was casehardened, the barrel rust blued and the screws and bits nitre blued. Today I had it at the range and it shoots like a charm. I planned on selling it when I built it but I may have to keep it for a while and play more with it.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.

  1. Rex, your attention to detail and the care to the craft is outstanding! I still have the 40-65 that you built for me years back in Winnipeg. It’s the one gun I will never sell.
Keep it up buddy, they are real pieces of art.
