Boring 32-40 Barrel for lining

Today I bored a Marlin 32-40 barrel for a new liner. I bought the liner from Nine35.ca. The liner is a TJ liner in 9/16” dia. I ground a pilot on a 9/16” drill bit to fit into the old bore. I mount the barrel in a 4 jaw chuck and drill at slow speed with lots of water based cutting oil. I can only advance about 1/4” before clearing chips and spraying on more lube. It took me about 3 hours to drill this 26” barrel. I degreased inside the hole and the outside of the liner and glued it with slow curing epoxy. Tomorrow the glue will be dry so I can start chambering and crowning the barrel. I have to recut the dovetails on the front of the barrel for the sight and mag tube.

I am a hobby gunsmith by night and teach at a University by day. I love taking old basket case but classic rifles and breathing new life into them. I do have a Ph.D. but it is in feed processing and nutrition and nothing to do with classic rifles but some of my friends call me the gun doctor for bringing these pieces back to life. I especially enjoy some of the old school methods like bone charcoal color casehardening.

Could you not rig up a cutting fluid nozzle at the front & flush the chips back towards the breech? Mind you, you’d need to have a catch basin & filter for it so you can re-use the fluid.
